Top 10 things about being pregnant.

by Elizabeth on December 3, 2013

Pregnancy? it’s an interesting time in life. Along with the normal joys of morning sickness, fatigue, back pain, and swelling come the other lovely changes and symptoms that are hardly appropriate to mention on a blog.

That’s not what this post is about. Pregnancy is also incredible. YOU’RE GROWING A HUMAN!!! How cool is that? A being inside of you goes from two microscopic cells to a 8 pound living, crying, breathing human and you don’t have to do anything. It just happens.

So without further ado, here is my list of the top ten things about being pregnant.

10. You must take naps. It’s like… one of the pregnancy ten commandments I’m pretty sure. Growing a human is no joke and requires (well me anyway) at least three extra hours of sleep daily. `

9. Running a 12 minute mile is a good thing. Usually faster is better. Being pregnant is the perfect excuse to take it easy/run slow/walk if you want/stop for water.

8. People offer to carry heavy things for you. Yes.

7. In most cases, husbands will do (nearly) anything. If I rolled over at 2 am and told Joe I NEEDED a chili cheese dog with a side of tater tots and a hot fudge sundae from Sonic I’m pretty sure he would get it for me. Wouldn’t you, hon?

6. You can show up to the cashier with the grossest/randomest combinations of food and no one says a word. One time I had the biggest craving for Honey Nut Cheerios and sushi (bites taken separately). I’m going to say that’s the most random one I’ve head yet!

5. Reserved parking spaces. Walking those fourteen extra steps when you don’t get one makes a big difference ;)

4. You get to name another human being. Hehehehe? Gertrude, Earl, Bertha, the possibilities are endless.

3. The fun body changes! Thick and shiny hair, long nails, the “pregnancy glow,” and big boobs. Some of us have been waiting a long time for these things!

2. Feeling something move around inside you is pretty cool. This was one of my favorite parts about being pregnant with Noah. We used to lay on the couch at night and Joe would watch TV and I’d watch my stomach haha.

1. You are changing the world. This new life will be someone’s best friend, someone’s first love, someone’s spouse, or someone’s parent. All because of you :) The anticipation of what the baby will be like is better than all birthdays and holidays combined!

Have a great Tuesday!

What were (or what do you imagine will be) the best and worst parts of being pregnant?

Oh, your number 1 got me all sappy! Must be pregnancy hormones ;)

I agree, pregnancy is pretty amazing and I feel blessed to get to experience it again! However, 12 minute miles are my fast pace when I’m NOT pregnant, haha! I’m slow as can be now, but I try :)

Thank you for #1! I needed that today as I start my 7th month of pregnancy – which has been a breeze until recently when I’ve had to stop running and have gotten two mega-colds in a row! What a great perspective to have on days when it just seems like I may be pregnant forever! Congratulations to you – looking forward to following your journey with baby #2!

That last one almost got me a little teary. Amazing!

The tater tots and sundae thing isn’t a bad perk either.

What a way to think about pregnancy, I like it, especially the 12 minute miles and the fact that people carry things for you! I would hope my husband would do anything for me when it comes time!

You have reserved parking places where you live? Geez, that would come in handy when baby thinks my bladder is a trampoline & I need to get to the ladies room quickly! Best parts–my life is forever changed in ways I could have never guessed & love; I’m learning body acceptance even as I am at my all time heaviest weight, I’m learning to trust my body instead of coerce it or try to control it, and there is a human being growing inside of me! Worst–first trimester left me not with glow, but the breakouts of a teenage boy; heartburn anytime I eat tomato-based foods (I miss pasta), no wine and no coffee. All small prices to pay ;), right?

Best would be growing another human in my own body. Worst? Probably the fact that I can’t have endless amounts of coffee or sushi… among other things.
Hahaha Gertrude… there’s also Olga or Ethyl. Then again, these are all girl names.

YES to all of these! Although I must admit, I got kind of annoyed when people would offer to carry things for me. I suppose that’s the independent side of me! ;)

I love watching my belly for kicks. Things I don’t like include the comments on my belly/body and having the skin of a 13 year old boy.

Naming the tiny human is SUCH a fun part that I would have never thought to put in a top 10, yet it probably is in my top 3in reality haha. Loved watching the kicks too!! It’s been a year since having my girl and sadly, I forget what the kicks feel like :(

Oh pregnancy naps are a MUST! What I loved most about being pregnant… 1- Eating without guilt… and 2- Maternity pants (seriously, why do they make regular pants? Maternity pants are soooo comfy!)

The best part was feeling the baby move, for sure. I really got close to him when he started moving alllll day and hiccuping. I missed that when he was born.

The worst part was getting carpal tunnel, but rest assured, the good outweighed the bad for me so I am NOT complaining. =) My husband bugs me for another baby already, and when I read sweet/cute little things like this, it really makes me want to get pregnant again ASAP. Then I remember how my boss is having his baby tomorrow, and that it sure would throw him for a loop if I didn’t space my babies out a little more! SOMEONE has to be in the office.

Ok, you got me tearing up with that last one. Soo sweet! I love that thought. You’re amazing.

I imagine that pregnancy will be completely unflattering on me. But I can’t wait for it for all of the reasons above. It’s a miracle and a partnership with God. How much cooler does it get than to play a part in creating another life?!

As I am laying in bed, miserable with morning sickness, I appreciate this post as a reminder of the good behind what I am going through! I am just 6 weeks pregnant with my first, and I just have started feeling miserable in the last three days. Hoping this is short lived or it’s going to me a long wait until July!
