13 Weeks: It’s only going up from here + finding out I was pregnant!

by Elizabeth on November 20, 2013

I’m excited to share my first pregnancy post with you! It feels like I’ve known forever but at the same time it’s flown by if that makes sense? Interestingly enough, I found out the morning I was speaking at HLS, back in September! I was feeling weird before that and had a hunch I might be pregnant so I packed a test (actually two tests? in case the first one was wrong of course) and took it on Saturday morning. A super faint line came up and I was semi-freaking out, so I texted a picture to Joe and called him to see if my eyes were playing tricks on me. He said he definitely saw a second line too so I immediately took the next one (which was digital.) Three long minutes passed and sure enough a “yes” popped up on the screen! We were laughing and crying all at the same time, all the while I was already 5 minutes late for a speakers meeting! I ran out of the room without brushing my teeth, hair, or making sure my shirt was right side out and when I got to the meeting I was still hyperventilating. Needless to say I got some strange looks so I told all the other speakers what had happened and they were thrilled!

The past two months have been rough and wonderful at the same time. I will spare you talking about how nauseous I was and how I thought I might be dying because Joe heard enough of that for all my readers combined? Let me just tell you how thrilled I am though because I know you haven’t heard it enough already :-)

Instead of doing week by week I’ll just sum up the first trimester quickly and give you some highlights!

Cravings/Aversions: I made sure to try to still post regular pictures of sweets on my blog because it would have been a dead giveaway if every time I reached for a cake ball I was taking one bite, gagging, and moving straight for the flaming hot cheetos (dipped in velveeta, yes that really happened.) Sweets pretty much took a back seat to things like fried chicken (or anything fried), fast food burgers, cheese, and pasta. I ate ravioli for a week straight in the beginning, and the people at Buffalo Wild Wings knew by name. In true pregnancy fashion, pickles and pickled okra were eaten at every lunch. Diet soda and anything carbonated made me nauseous at night. I think at this point I’m pretty much back to normal although I could live without sweets (never mind, not normal.)

*I realize the above combination of foods isn’t quite a balanced or healthy diet in any way, shape, or form. I still see my dietician and she was of the opinion that your body will tell you what it needs. If you’re craving fat, that’s what your baby and your body need. I don’t plan on continuing that way of eating but it was sort of fun while it lasted.

Sleep: About 8 hours at night and 3 hours worth of naps when Noah was sleeping. It was pretty ridiculous. Luckily I’m on the downhill and I hardly ever need naps anymore.

Mood: Poor Joe. I was (am?) a crazy person. Let’s just say there were moments where even I was like, “Wow, that was really mean.” For some reason I have just been super short tempered and it gets even worse if I get hungry. I don’t remember being that way with Noah.

Workouts: Most days I run 4 miles at a snail’s pace before Joe leaves for work.

Due Date:  May 24, 2014!

Gender: It’s a BOY! Unless you ask Joe than it’s a GIRL! We shall see who is right come December? Although I don’t even think I need an anatomy scan since I just KNOW it’s a boy.

I’m sure I left some stuff out? let me know if you have any questions! Have a great Wednesday!

Have you told Noah that he’s going to be a big brother? :-)

Yes! When we ask him if there’s a baby in mommy’s tummy he says, “baby my tummy too!” It’s one of those little things you don’t want to forget!

When I tell H there is a baby in my tummy, she always lifts her shirt and looks at hers too! Precious.

Not craving sweets? You ARE crazy! Haha just kidding, though being pregnant does some weird things to your sense of smell and taste.

Can’t wait to find out the gender! You aren’t going to keep it a secret, right?

Awww LOVED reading this. :) Thanks for sharing with us! I’m so happy for you. I’m curious – what makes you feel so strongly that it’s a boy??

I guess a few things? it’s been exactly the same symptom wise as my pregnancy with Noah, all the old wives tales point to boy, and I think I just always imagined myself having boys first?

So exciting! I can totally relate to your first trimester crazy sickness and weird foods. I felt so bad thinking “my baby’s not getting any nutrients!” but had mom’s tell me actually the baby will get plenty of nutrients, it’s me that would be lacking :) I’ve also been struggling with those mood swings! They really take over! We’ve had quite a few apologies in our house lately… Also, your due date is my birthday! So fun :) I’m due May 12th, so if this baby is late we may have to share a birthday. Not sure how I feel about that one :) Curious to see if your gender guess is right. Glad you feel better!

It is so exciting. My husband wants more babies asap. I always tell him he is NUTS to want to jump back on the train so soon, but then seeing all this cute preggos (including my absolute best friend in the world), makes me sad not to be pregnant too!

Congrats!! How exciting baby #2! You will have to let me know how it goes with having a 2 yr old and being pregnant with number 2. I have an almost 2 yr old and I don’t know if I could handle being pregnant and taking care of a toddler.
