Romantic weekend getaway!

by Elizabeth on October 23, 2013

Where did we leave off? Oh right? A&M just barely lost and I was downing caramel pie. We left the restaurant and began the extremely quiet two hour drive up into the mountains in order to get to Sapphire. There was no phone signal most of the way which really wasn’t too convenient for the out-of-staters relying on iPhone GPS to get us to the hotel. Eventually we stopped at a convenient store and asked for directions. We were both pretty exhausted by the time we checked in.

After breakfast Sunday morning we knew there were several things we wanted to see that day so we packed lunches and set off (again, with spotty signal so we were lucky to find stuff? what did people do before iPhones??) Our first stop was Whitewater Falls which is actually taller than Niagara! Luckily it was only about a quarter mile hike up to the lookout.

After driving about 20 minutes, we came upon Silver Run Falls next which wasn’t as impressive as Whitewater but still something you don’t see everyday!

One of the other major things we wanted to do was to hike up Whiteside Mountain to the tallest point east of the Mississippi. It was only about a 20 minute hike since we were already so high. We sat at the edge of the cliff and enjoyed our lunch together!

Hiking is extremely tiring…

We decided to go back to the hotel and get a nap before one last hike and dinner. This was by far my favorite part of the day! Not far from the hotel there was a lake with a 3 mile trail around it. No hills or crazy terrain? just a beautiful walk in perfect weather.

The area seemed like it was home to mostly retired couples and it was a huge golf community.

After the hike, we headed to an amazing dinner at a country club not too far away. Joe and I laughed because we were the only people under 65, yet we were the first ones there and done! We fit right in :-)

Normally I’m ready to come back from vacation but I’ll admit I wasn’t ready to leave this place! Hopefully we will be back one day.

Questions:

1. Where was the last trip you too?

2. Describe a romantic weekend!

What a gorgeous place, especially with the fall foliage!
The last trip I took was this last weekend to Portland, ME, but it was for business so I didn’t get to do much.

Gorgeous! We just took a weekend trip to Arizona and will be going home to Chicago for 10 days at Christmas. It’s been nearly 7 months since I’ve seen my best friend, parents, & sister and almost a year since I’ve seen my brother so I’m super excited. My husband and I are looking into going to Europe or a cruise next year for a more extensive vacation, but we shall see.

I’m so jealous! I just moved from Seattle to Florida and I MISS scenery like this. It is for sure the hardest part of the transition.

I am hoping to head over soon to Amelia Island for a romantic getaway.

My last trip was to Philadelphia for a weekend if it counts; otherwise, my last long distance trip was to Puerto Rico in high school. It’s been a long time since I’ve gone on a really nice vacation!

The perfect romantic vacation for me would definitely include a beach and some down time. A beach walk during sunset MUST be included! ;-)

Those falls are SO gorgeous. I just want to place myself in these photos immediately!

How gorgeous! LOve the waterfall and the changing colors of the leaves :)
Last trip I took was to Lake Tahoe. It was so nice and blue over there (like the picture of the lake you had here!).

That looks nice! The last trip I went on was white water rafting in Deep Creek Lake (MD) it was SO nice! Weekend getaways w/o the kids are really needed sometimes!

Being the only ones under 65 reminded me of a cruise my husband and I went on. We knew the line we chose served an “older” crowd. It was funny seeing that in person though. It was fantastic though and just our speed. I loved every second of that trip.

That looks like an awesome place to visit. We just started hiking this year and taking “adventure dates” to local parks and whatnot so it’s really fun reading out different places to hike (even if it’s nowhere near us!).

The last trip we took (outside of going to a race out of state or our friend’s house the next state over) was to FL for a wedding. It was gorgeous there but hot, hot, hot…and it was on April!!

Oh my goodness this is breathtaking scenery! This weekend would be ideal for me to go see some fall foliage in my area but I’m so busy.

A romantic trip I took was to Door County, WI. It’s a little over 3 hours away… usually it’s a summer destination but we went in February and got a ‘romance package’. Stayed at an awesome resort, toured 3 winerys and took a trolley to each one. And had a champagne toast for one of the couples 50th wedding anniversary overlooking a large {snow-covered} valley. It was wonderful!
