Taking no prisoners.

by Elizabeth on August 13, 2013

Just an FYI, don’t speed down our street. Sheriff Noah is out and he takes no prisoners.

I met up with two of my running buddies yesterday to celebrate a birthday. I had never had Zoe’s but I had heard really great things about it. Fresh and delicious but we all knew the real reason we picked Zoe’s? it’s next door to a new little bakery called The Sweet Boutique.

I decided on this Boston Cream Pie cupcake with cream filling and also got a Salted Caramel one for today! They also had macaroons (I’ve never tried them and was tempted!) and cake pops. I won’t lie? these are no Sprinkles, but it’s about 40 minutes closer to home.

You will probably never again hear me say this on the blog, but the real highlight yesterday food wise was dinner.

Someone please change the password to my Pinterest account. It’s getting absurd.

I’m calling this “Copycat Panda Express Sweet and Sour Chicken.” It literally tasted exactly the same. It’s not the least bit healthy but it was amazing.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast (cubed)
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 2 eggs
  • garlic salt to taste
  • 1 cup canola oil
  • I used pre made sweet and sour sauce (judge me)

Coat the cubes in corn starch. Beat the eggs and add garlic salt. Dip the breaded cubes in the eggs and fry them in a pan of oil until brown. Cover the chicken in sauce and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Flip halfway through to cook them evenly.

I served it with leftover pad thai noodles and Joe literally didn’t stop raving about dinner. Noah hasn’t jumped on this ethnic bandwagon I started. Give me some time ;-)

Have a great Tuesday!

Questions:

1. Have you tried macaroons? Describe them to me.

2. What do you order at Panda Express (or any Chinese place?)

I’ve only had macaroons ONCE, but I had them at the best macaroon shop in the world, Laduree, in Paris. They were good. They tasted kind of like…well the inside was almost the consistency of one of those Little Debbie pies, the chocolate ones. And the outside is harder. That was a really bad description, but that’s the best I can do (plus this was like three years ago). They were pretty good, but I never had another one so clearly I didn’t just love them.

Love that picture of Noah.

I’ve had macaroons! I don’t get them here though unless they’re from a real French bakery.. I had them ALL the time when I studied in France. Amaerican macaroons just aren’t the same..! They are the perfect combination of gooey without being too soft- I like to still feel the “bite” when I bite down on something… if that makes sense?

I always order sesame chicken from Chinese places. But if we go to the mall, sometimes I get bourbon chicken or orange chicken. I’m a sucker for those free samples, so I usually order whatever they’re giving away :)

Your chicken looks delicious! I usually order either Hunan chicken or General Tsao’s chicken when we order Chinese food. I not a fan of macaroons…

Love Zoes! Their side salad with grilled chicken and onions has made my summer lunch list on a weekly basis. Their chocolate cake and cookie are pretty amazing too!

I usually roll with the orange chicken at Chinese places… Now that I think about it, I haven’t had Chinese food in FOREVER though. I totally go in phases with it!

I had a Boston cream cupcake Saturday! Mine also needed more frosting to cake ratio! How dare they be stingy on the frosting it’s by far the best part! I have never had a macaroon… The fact that they are normally all colored like pink purple and green really weirds me out! And they don’t look doughy and let’s be honest cookies are only good if they are doughy!

I love your recipes because they look awesome but also easy… which is about the only thing I can handle in the kitchen. ;) Never had a macaroon either, but those cupcakes look heavenly!

The sweet and sour chicken looks so delicious! Sometimes fake Chinese food just hits the spot :P I usually don’t get Panda Express, so I don’t know what they have.

macaroons are really, really good! i don’t really know what they are but the are really moist but with a firmer outside—kind of like a brownie. i think they may have more egg yolk in them? that may be a lie. but it’s all about the texture, man!

Macaroons are amazing. They taste like a wafer cookie, but sweeter and chewier. I’m fortunate to live and work very close to a great Parisian bakery, so macaroon eating happens at least once a week for me!

If you are having issues with Pinterest, I probably shouldn’t tell you about my #AugustPinterestChallenge –> to try to do 8 new Pinterest recipes in the month of August. . . :) And that chicken might have to be one of the new ones I do!! I love orange chicken from Panda Express. YUM. But totally not a good thing to eat regularly. . . oh well, that’s life, right? ;)

Macaroons are my favorite!!! People think I’m crazy when I say that, but I love coconut. If you love coconut then the only way to describe them is heaven. They are gooey and chewy coconut on the inside while the outside is perfectly toasted for just the slightest crunch. I wouldn’t even call it crunch so much as a delicious soft shell protecting all that chewy goodness inside.

Man, now I want a macaroon!

SO….what did you think of Zoe’s? It’s one of my all time favorites! I’m actually pumped because I talked the hubs into taking me to get some tonight. My favorite is the turkey pita! And their chicken salad is good too.

Noah is precious, as always. Does the child ever have a bad day?! ;-)
