Reasons to run.

by Elizabeth on July 18, 2013

I was reading my August issue of Runner’s World this week and I came across an article that had some stuff I wanted to share with you. We all know running is great exercise, but did you know:

1. It GROWS cartilage. Everyone talks about how bad running is for your knees. New research suggests running actually increases cartilage productions, reducing risks for arthritis.

2. It sharpens hearing. Research from Bellarmine University found that very fit women were six percent more likely to have better hearing than less fit counterparts. Exercise improves circulation to the ear, which provides a greater supply of nutrients to help preserve hearing.

3. It saves your skin. Rutgers researchers found that mice who drank caffeinated water and then ran had fewer skin-cancer tumors then rodents who either just got caffeine or just ran. The caffeine-exercise combo caused fewer damaged cells to develop.

4. It beats migraines. Migraine sufferers experienced fewer headaches when they worked out for 40 minutes three times a week over three months.

5. It regenerates muscle. Running triggers a type of stem cell to generate new muscle preventing age related muscle loss!

6. It eases anxiety. We all knew that one…

7. It prevents cancer. Running helps prevent lung and gastrointestinal cancer. But not if you smoke while you are running.

8. Increased brain power. No WONDER I am so smart Joe!

9. It strengthens bones. Weight bearing exercise increases bone density, which guards against osteoporosis and fractures.

10. You just might inspire someone along the way :-)

I run because it makes me feel PROUD and STRONG. Plus, it’s good time to clear my mind!!!

It makes me feel proud of myself… I feel I can’t do this wrong, I cant mess this up even if it’s a short run or a long run.

I run because it keeps me sane, healthy, strong and when I’m having a great run is when I feel the most alive!

I run because although it may suck during that feeling afterwards is phenomenal and it gives me energy for the rest of the day. Plus its time to myself to just put on some tunes and go clear my head or quite the opposite and do lots of thinking.

Oh! Fun! I run because it helps me to be a better me than I would have been without my run! I think that everyone I meet gets a better me if I’ve run that day versus if I haven’t.

I actually don’t think it about that very much…but if I did it would just be because of how good I feel when I do it, and I guess I just simply love it!
(it also gives me a little me liberty when it comes time for dessert :) )

I love these facts! Especially the one about hearing. That seems so random, but I’ll take it.

I like running because it always calms me down.

Running balances me. No matter what happened during the day, if I go for a run, I always feel better when I’m done.

I also think more people need to know about the cartilage study and the bone density study. I’m so over people that don’t know what they’re talking about telling me that running is destroying my bones & joints!
