A trip to the Splash Pad and I need some advice!

by Elizabeth on June 6, 2013

Yesterday I started off National Running Day with a 5 mile run followed to a trip to the YMCA (my new family friendly version of crossfit haha ;-). If anyone is interested in trying a workout they post them online here, but I ended up kind of modifying and doing my own workout of:

10 minutes rowing

3 reps of:

40 wall balls

30 kettlebell swings (20 lb ball)

20 step ups (super high box)

10 burpess

If you don’t rest between exercises and sets it was just intense enough to make me wonder half way through if I could finish all the reps but not so intense that I wasn’t able to. Perfect! Just as I finished the man carrying the sign, “Elizabeth for Noah” walked by me and I knew Noah wasn’t doing well in the child care for the second time. I’m trying to let him learn how to self soothe, but luckily that workout only took 25 minutes!

After the workout we headed to the splash pad with good friends for some fun.

Kyleigh is almost WALKING! When I met her she wasn’t even three months old. It’s crazy how fast time goes with a kid!

Home for lunch/naptime afterwards! P.S. pears are soooo good. I think they might be my favorite fruit EVER but it’s so hard to know how to pick them at the store! Any tips??

For dinner we had spaghetti and meatballs…

This week has been awesome because every night we have been able to go on a family walk after dinner! I highly recommend taking your family out for some quality connection time rather than watching TV or playing on the internet! We have spent many nights doing those things too. We came home and had some dessert :-)

One of the best Wednesdays in a while! I hope yours was great too!

1. Parents: any tips on leaving kids in child care when they cry???

2. I need to know how to pick good pears at the grocery store.

3. What’s a fun night time activity you do with your family?!

I am not really sure the right way to pick good pears. Usually I buy them when they are still a little hard and within 2 days they are perfect to eat.
Since it is just my husband and me, we usually take our dog for a walk, or we like to drive around and look at big houses. We pick out the ones we would live in. :)

I am not sure to how pick a good pear either! I just grab them and hope they turn out okay! We always take a walk after dinner and then after the walk we have been playing games! I like doing this more than the tv or internet as well!

Let me know what you learn about pear picking. I just grab a bag at SAMs and eat them when they feel soft-ish but not gooey…like goldilocks? Just right

Aw the splash pad looks fun! Pears – I just find one that’s not squishy but not totally solid? :) And your dessert looks amazing!

I just buy the soft pears?

Leaving kids in daycare can be tricky.. t and b have been going since they were 3 months old so they actually LOVE it. But I think you just have to keep taking him at the same time so he sees some familiar faces and introduce him to some other kids?
He is a mommas boy ;) Which is awesome because my kids don’t even say bye anymore! haha!

I have a sweet little mama’s boy too, and I totally agree about taking him at the same time to see familiar faces! That helped my son a lot. Great advice! :)

Nightly walks with my little family are honestly my favorite part of the day. It’s an awesome time to relax a bit, talk about our days, get in a little exercise, and get our puppy out moving too!

I love pears too! I pick pears that have a little give by the stem, but are mostly firm. I don’t know how you are supposed to.

I know the challenge of leaving a kiddo in the gym daycare well! My son had a hard time for the first year of his life. I knew I would only get 15-30 min of exercise every time I dropped him off (this also happened when leaving him with my husband for quick trips to the grocery store or any other time we were separated for more than a few minutes). Unfortunately it took pretty much the entire year to ease him into it. He loves it now and even asks to go!

That’s tough with the crying…makes it so hard to leave, I’m sure! My kids are older now, but for some reason, both always separated really easily from me. I hope you can get it figured out!

I’ve never had a bad experience buying pears- I usually get 1 or 2 that are almost ready to be eaten and the rest hard so they’ll ripen. Only bad thing I find is that once they ripen you have to eat them NOW or they’re bad. Not sure, if like bananas, you can freeze them or throw them in baked goods once they’re too ripe to enjoy on their own.

Your spaghetti looks really good. What type of sauce did you make? I’m clueless on your pear question… sorry!

i started taking my kids to the ymca at 6 weeks (minimum age) so they just grew up with it 5-6 days a week. however, around 18 months-2 years they both became a little attached and clingy. but i am a no nonsense (i know they’re fine) type of mom so i would kiss and hug them and just go. if it was ever too bad they always get you. but they rarely ever did. my kids would always calm down after a bit. good luck i know it’s hard.
as for pears. i always buy under ripe and wait for them to ripen. then when they are tender and smell good i cut it up.

I pick pears that are a little on the hard side and then let them sit on the counter until they soften up a tiny bit. Your workout sounds great! Isn’t weight training great?!

I like my pears pretty soft but the key is they have to be soft all over. No mushy spots and hard spots! We love the evening family walk now that it’s nice out. We actually live like 100 feet from a park but we have B convinced that it’s a 30 min walk away. That way we can take a walk around the neighborhood and then wind up at the park so he can get out and play!
