National Running Day!!! (nerd alert)

by Elizabeth on June 4, 2013

Happy National Running Day!!! I am celebrating this morning by taking my favorite running partner out for a few miles (really different than every other day, I know). Yesterday when I walked into the living room he was laced up and ready to go. How do you say no to this?? He walked around saying, “mama shoe mama shoe,” and in fact, his new thing is to put mama before every other word meaning everything is mine… Mama house, mama car, mama food. Smart boy ;-) Dada take notes!

Back to adult language, in case any Houston area runners are interested, today at Memorial Park from 5:30-8:00 pm there is an event to celebrate the great sport of running with refreshments, music, t-shirts, and of course a 3 or 6 mile run!!!

You can donate your old running shoes to SEARCH Homeless services and receive a free gift! And yes, dirty running shoe is the scent I like guests to smell upon entering my house.

There will also be a drawing to win an entry to win one of five spots in the 2014 Houston Marathon.

I thought I would end by listing a few of the ways running has truly enriched my life over the past 10+ years…

1. Most of the core people in my life (husband, best friends, etc.) have been met through running in some way. If I’m honest I bet it’s close to 90%…

2. It’s my me time. Whether I go with friends or alone, when I’m running it means I’m not cleaning, cooking, or care taking. And while I do love doing all of those things (maybe not cleaning…) I also really value getting a break.

3. It’s allowed me to travel. I recently ran a half marathon in Utah and met a pretty cool blogging friend. At A&M we traveled weekly all over the country which allowed me to see things I might not have seen otherwise!

4. I’ve accomplished goals and experienced defeat. I’ve had great races and workouts and experienced the high of endorphins accompanies both. I’ve also had some really low moments in running and each experience was a gift in which I could learn something!

5. It helps me keep things in perspective. I may not always be able to run. Every run I get is one to be thankful for!

Don’t forget to check out the giveaway I have going if your running is in need of a little something extra!

Running gives me ME TIME! It is the 3 times a week where I am away from home, my son, hubby, everybody and I just go and run. I feel like I am in my own little world while I am running. It is hard to explain to non-runners to feeling you get while running. Running challenges me, pushes me, makes me stronger, gives me freedom, I could go on and on….

Running helps keep me healthy, makes me happy, and sets me free. I’ve been battling a chest infection this week, but have somehow been able to run and running makes me feel 100x better. Running also makes me feel invincible and there is nothing I cannot do when I am running (figuratively speaking, of course!)

I love the picture of Noah. It is so super cute. I think he will be a runner too!!

Running has created opportunities and friendships which I would not have had if it were not for running.

Happy National Running Day to you, too, Elizabeth!

I have met so many great friends through running! I probably wouldn’t have time to hang out with some of them if it wasn’t for going on runs together! My running group and I are meeting later today for a special mid-week run just to celebrate our “special little holiday!”

First, that pic of Noah – too, too Adorable! :-) And yay for your “nerd alert”! I feel like a kindred spirit… I just put a “nerdy tendency alert” in my post today – ha!

Running has enriched in more ways than I ever expected – it’s bonding time for me & hubby (we run on Saturdays together occasionally), it keeps me healthy, it challenges me/makes me stronger and I look forward to it allowing me to travel as well (I have my eye on a half marathon in San Diego ;-) ).

Adorable picture of Noah! Running has helped me gain confidence and helps me remember to respect and love my body, instead of criticizing it! I remember running a 1/2 marathon one time with a mantra of “I have strong & beautiful legs” in my head the whole time…. that is when I realized how powerful running can be for me! I love the list you wrote of ways running has enriched your life.
