Caught in the rain, dodging hail.

by Elizabeth on May 23, 2013

Yesterday morning started with a run followed by Crossfit. I always cringe when I read the workout on the white board and there is no running involved. That’s the only way I keep up! Hey, we all start somewhere right?

I almost had Joe convinced to come with me but he opted out… We swapped Noah duty at home after lunch and he did some errands while Noah and I went to the park. Then we met at the mall for an iPhone upgrade :-)

Dinner was a salad with BBQ chicken.

We went for a walk after dinner. Words from the wise: check before leaving from now on. We ended up getting caught in a thunderstorm and I’m pretty sure I got hit with hail. Joe and I were sprinting home with Noah in the stroller and we had a few people pull over and offer us rides home… We were too busy racing each other to take them up on it.

An ark would have come in handy though.

As promised, real dessert again. A chocolate extreme cupcake from Ooh La La.

And if anyone is interested, I thought that this was a great article on the popular phrase “strong is the new skinny…”

1. What’s the weather like where you are?

2. What are your thoughts on “strong vs. skinny”?

We’re supposed to get a lot of rain today. Boo. :( I’ll have to check that article out. The strong vs skinny articles are fascinating to me. I love reading ‘em!

That is the best looking cupcake I’ve ever seen. The frosting looks extra fluffy which is pretty much a requirement for me. It’s raining and muggy out today. I guess that’s motivation to skip another run today… I think the strong vs. skinny campaign has taken an unhealthy turn just like the “skinny” campaign did. Now it’s just promoting girls to eat very little and work out a lot to build muscle. In reality, those “fitspo” pictures aren’t really all that healthy either. When it was first created, it was a way to combat eating disorders and unhealthy behaviors but now it’s just as bad, maybe even worse, in my opinion.

HAHA, that ark reference! Too funny. We had a huge storm yesterday here too that hit while we were trying to put up a trampoline. Boo.

It’s rainy and muggy here, too! But I think if I had a chocolate cupcake, it might make the day better ;)

At least in my world, strong is the new skinny. I don’t need to lose weight anymore and sure, I would love to have “skinnier” legs or smaller hips but I like food and I want to live my life without restrictions. Eating a balanced diet and becoming stronger in the gym is the way I’m going now!

The weather is hot over here. Miserably hot. And humid. And blah. Lol! I would gladly take that rain. That cupcake looks awesome by the way, yum! And iPhone upgrade? Nice!

It’s humid here in Florida, but so far it dont mind. I live in Colorado and believe it or not I like sweating when I run. In Colorado you don’t sweat, well it evaporates so darn fast.

I loved that article and couldn’t agree more… We just trade one ideal body type for another, and while it may appear healthier at first glance, people are still killing themselves to get that kind of body. It may have started out as something positive, but now people are just taking it way too far.

Haha! I feel like I could have used an arc the last few days with these showers in Dallas.

I’m about to read that article, sounds interesting!

It’s sunny right now…but the last three days it’s been rainy and thunderstormy so I’m not sure what today is going to bring. I read that article yesterday and I think it’s really interesting. I agree that society is now creating new body ideals for women. I hope that one day we can reach a point where society says “It doesn’t matter how you look, you’re beautiful anyway! Here’s models in all shapes and sizes.”

I love that you’re loving Cross Fit! It’s always fun to switch up the workout routine now and again. I love even more that you’re back to real desserts. That cupcake makes me swoooon <3. I can't wait to read that article. Thanks for sharing!

Yummy cupcake! Cupcakes are the BEST, aren’t they?

The weather is not so nice here in NJ today. Hot/humid and we’re supposed to get nasty thunderstorms later today. I hope the holiday weekend weather is nicer!

Seriously that cupcake looks soo good. I don’t really like chocolate based ones though so I’d just eat the frosting :)

I agree with the article. I like the general idea of what they’re saying but the “strong” they’re portraying isn’t exactly correct either. Not everyone is going to look like those girls who are super toned.

I hate the strong is the new skinny business for many reasons that were listed in the article you linked. I hate that it adds another dimension to what we are already expected to do. I hate that the pictures are totally soft porn and we are being brain washed to think that that is what is expected of us. I hate that sexy is the only word used to describe women these days. I hate that we are all expected to fit into a mold that is even more unrealistic than the one before.

All this is supposed to motivate us to improve ourselves? I don’t think so. Nothing will improve us if we start on the outside. We have to work on the inside first, then the confidence will come. As confidence comes we have a more realistic approach as to who we are as individuals and we gain a sense of what accomplishment is for us. A woman who is truly beautiful, is comfortable with who she is. I would rather be described as beautiful and confidant than strong, skinny or sexy.

Weather up here in NY is rainy and thunderstorms! Only problem is that its keeping me from running outside!…ALSO! I’m moving to Houston in the next two weeks to start a new job and I was wondering if you knew of any great running spots/trails for me to check out?

24 Lisa @ Live and Be Awesome May 23, 2013 at 12:21 pm

It’s nice that people would offer you a ride home! I think that strong definitely beats skinny, but only because it’s healthy to be strong. I don’t believe having a “fit”-looking body should be the new ideal instead of a skinny body. It’s just replacing one often-unachievable physical ideal for another.

It’s storming and pouring rain as I type!

Your Whole Foods salad looks great. We have a WF coming to our town sometime in 2014! In the meantime it and TJ’s are about a 25-minute drive.

I usually don’t eat dessert, but man that cupcake D:

It poured this afternoon! It was a weird storm; I was walking to my car when it started raining, so I started running. I’d run a few feet, and the rain would stop, then catch up to me again when I slowed down! It was the weirdest thing, raining in some spots and not only a few feet away.

We are on vacation inflorida and I have no idea how people who live here stay hydrated! I get back from every run soaking wet with sweat and I am not a heavy sweater! I want to go earlier but we stay up late and so far 6:45 is about as early as I can get out :).
I guess wanting to be stronger and marathon training has helped me through my eating disorder so I do want to be stronger than skinnier…although I do have moments I see someone skinny and I have to remind myself not to go there! I like the person I am when I am trying to be stronger way better than the person I was when I was trying to be skinnier. But I agree 100% with the previous post….I think there is way too much focus on appearance which is the cause of so many problems! It becomes priorities placed on things that really don’t even matter instead of focusing on the important things in life. When god sees us he sees our heart not our weight or our thighs ect. It is just so easy to get wrapped up in the things that don’t matter and I am totally guilty of it also but working everyday to let that go and focus on what counts :)
