First Family Camping Trip

by Elizabeth on April 22, 2013

I hope everyone had a great weekend! It’s been awhile since we’ve chatted? I hope you didn’t miss me too much ;-)

I have to say, for being the end of April in Texas it’s quite chilly. 70 degrees during the day requires 2 sweatshirts and giant sweatpants to keep warm. In all seriousness though, this was our tent. We forgot the cover so we spent the first night freezing to death in 40 degree weather and no wind protection. Luckily the second night we wised up and packed into the in-laws tent with 5 other people. More bodies = more warmth.

While we were there, Joe taught Noah how to fly a kite…

It was so windy these things stayed straight up for approximately 12 hours until we reeled them back in!

We all hung out while the boys did some fishing.

And the food? when was the last time you had gushers? I think I was 6 years old the last time I had them but they were just as good as I remembered. An explosion of fruity goodness in your mouth.

I planned to use these cookies in s’more making but I forgot when it came time. I know, the first time in blog history I forgot about a dessert I had planned. Don’t think this will become a regular occurrence. Luckily s’mores are awesome with graham crackers too!

My brother in law Jeffrey is a talented artist. His cheese whiz creations can’t be beat.

(That’s a quadruple stacker sandwich topped with a flower just fyi.)

Oh, and my niece is a rockstar.

The highlight of the weekend meal wise was this jalepeno cheese sausage. Wow!!! I’m sad to say I didn’t eat sausage for many years but luckily this is changing.

picmonkey_image

We watched a beautiful sunset :-)

And ended our nights with a bonfire and s’mores! I could probably be bribed to go back camping every weekend with this one treat alone. We had caramel marshmallows which added an additional layer of awesomeness.

Questions:

1. Do you like s’mores? When was the last time you had gushers?

2. Tell me what you did this weekend!!!

Looks like a lot of fun! And how cute is the kids’ table?! I’m jealous you guys are camping already! Hopefully we’ll get out in late may.
I am a s’mores queen. Last camping season I fund monster marshmallows. SO good!

Looks like a fun camping trip! I love smores – I don’t have them enough! The same goes for gushers too!

My roommates and I had our last long run yesterday for our half marathon this Saturday!!! Woohooo!!

You should try smores with peanut butter cups, junior mints…whatever chocolate candy you like. SO GOOD!

I definitely just texted my mom telling her that next time we make s’mores to make sure to buy oreos too because that’s brilliant. I’m sure there will be plenty more opportunities. I wish it was 70 degrees here! We’re still hovering in the 60s sadly. I need some warm weather ASAP.

LOVE smores, especially with peanut butter in the mix. Your tent looks like a hotel room! Maybe I could camp with you!

I haven’t had s’mores since last summer, but I cannot wait to have them this year! Caramel sounds like a wonderful addition. I celebrated by boyfriend’s birthday this weekend! We had dinner with our friends and played Hedbanz afterwards! So much fun! Aside from being freezing it looks like you had a good time!!

How fun to go camping with family!!
Love s’mores! (are there people who don’t??- that’s absurd!)
I use to LOVE gushers but now the thought of something exploding in my mouth kind of makes my stomach turn :/
This weekend: yoga, tempo run that kicked my butt, checking things off of the wedding to do list, and eating lots of yummy junk.

Gushers were the best part of lunch as a kid. My mom would never buy them (the dentist said they were bad for our teeth) but a friend would always share one or two from her pack. So good! S’mores are also fabulous. Chocolate + melty, sugary marshmallow + crunchy graham? Give it to me!

I haven’t been camping in years…I do love s’mores, but I can’t remember the last time I had some :( that needs to change! Looks like everyone enjoyed the camping trip. You are brave for bringing a baby camping. I haven’t had the courage yet to take my son (16 months old) camping. Our weekend was pretty low key. I did run a 10 miler yesterday morning.

I love s’mores…I add peanut butter to mine (to make them healthier). Gushers have always grossed me out for some reason. I think it is because of the middle part being so syrupy.

I’m back to running after my injury!! THAT is what I did this weekend!! Oh and Ben and I celebrated 6 months married (really just a reason to celebrate) with froyo.

p.s. Noah continues to be adorable every day!

Not a s’mores fan at all sorry L! I was a big gusher fan when I was little… I only liked the tropical flavor ones though the other flavors were disgusting! Mitch and I got gushers last year because both were talking about how we use to love them… We both thought they were nasty now… It was a sad day! Glad you survived your camping trip!

Not a huge s’mores fan but I’ll still eat them. :)
I went to a great work out class, went into work, saw 42 for the second time (and loved it just as much!), hung out with friends, ate food, spent some lounging in the front yard in the sun. It was lovely.
I love that you’re all bundled up for 70 degrees! Remember how cold you were in St. George when it was 40? Too funny.

Love s’mores but can’t remember the last time I had them, sadly. :( This has to change cause the hubby has NEVER had them before! …So, I know exactly what I’m making whenever we can plan a camping trip. ;-)

P.S. has anyone tried the s’mores at Cosi? Been wanting to try them but it’s a tad pricey, so I wanted to find out if it’s worth it first. Ha :)

This makes me seriously want to go camping! If anything, just for the opportunity to eat some s’mores. Love those darn things. I used to actually melt marshmallows over our stove and make s’mores when I was a kid. Which was probably around the same time that Gushers last made an appearance…

I absolutely love Gushers. Especially when they are kept in the fridge. SO GOOD. Last time I made a smore was a few months ago and I did use two chocolate chip cookies instead of graham crackers and I don’t ever think I will be able to have a normal smore again. It was life changing.

I love your nieces red hair. I’m sure I tell you that every time you post pictures of her. Seriously, it’s so cute. I haven’t had s’mores in a while because marshmallows freak me out, but I used to love them! I also haven’t had Gushers in a long time either..for the same reason. It’s upsetting to have these food aversions! Coming from FL, that weather is cold to me as well and I’d be just as bundled up…if not more. I am a WIMP when it comes to cold weather, despite growing up in Chicago.

I miss Joe’s Monday posts! Would you do a follow-up post? Maybe on what your biggest struggle(s) have been and how you have overcome them or deal with them? What the hardest habits to break were, etc.? I love reading about your story..gives me (and others I’m sure) hope :)
