Making the most of time.

This post is mostly a random compilation of thoughts and pictures… just go with it. 

I talked a bit two weeks back about changing the way I spend my time. I wanted to do a little update and let you know how things are going!

My two main goals were to spend less time on social media and to take a step back from blogging a bit (funny I’m sitting here typing this). Initially, staying off social media except during times I had designated for myself was really hard. Like I said, I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, or blogs I follow constantly. Like most anything, the more you practice the better you get. I intentionally leave my phone behind sometimes so I’m not even tempted to get on. 

The Results:

1. I feel more engaged in my life and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on important moments and interactions with REAL people (although I still want to have pictures of Noah :-) ). For instance:

2. I think social media was almost becoming an addiction for me. What if I missed something “important”? What if I offended someone by not liking or commenting on a post? What if I wasn’t aware of everything everyone else was doing??? I had to make friends with “SO WHAT”. And it’s so freeing. 

3. I’m actually reading real books, enjoying movies, praying, or simply just sitting and relaxing instead of spending almost all of my free time on the internet. I honestly didn’t realize how much stimulation I was bombarding my brain with!

4. I feel LESS bored. I thought it would be the opposite and I would be wondering what to do with myself. Turns out there are lots of other awesome things going on (especially at donut shops). Who would have thought?

5. I know I’m making changes for the better and setting a good example for my kids. Which really feels good.

I sometimes feel that I am constantly checking this and that on social media and my blog. It can get exhausting. I took a hiatus from all of that in Dec and Jan (including FB and Twitter!), and it felt like a much-needed break!

Such a great post! YES — I absolutely feel like I get sucked into social media/blogging WAY too much. When I do step back and pay attention, I realize just how much time I am missing with my daughter due to “multitasking” and phone distractions. I keep reminding myself that I can never get this moment back — she’s this age for a minute, and I want to enjoy and cherish every single one of those moments. Thanks for the little reminder to give full attention to our littlest loves :)

I’ve often felt like I spent too much time on social media, and a lot of it is because social media was made for our generation. When I started college, Facebook had just come out, so it’s the main way I market, but it’s also how I stay in touch with most of my friends from school. I don’t think I’ve found a way to balance it honestly, but now that I blog, I spend more time working on social media than I do blogging.

Love these impacts from not having your phone with you all the time. I agree- it’s hard to break away from it, but the times I don’t have it, I swear I pay attention to my surroundings even more!

Disconnecting a bit sounds like a great idea. I do feel pretty distracted by my phone and computer a lot. I’m still figuring the balance out–spending enough time to grow my blog but not too much that my relationships suffer. Love all those photos of Noah! He reminds me of my nephew.

*Raises hand* Guilty. I always try to read and comment on tons of blogs and do the social media thang, but sometimes that prevents me from sitting down with my parents to chat about the day. A lot of times, it makes me procrastinate too.

I have worried about my *addiction* to social media & the internet lately too. I think this is something we all have to worry about to a certain extent… I am making it a point to stop multi-tasking and to notice when I am mindlessly scrolling through things. A way I have been “unplugging” is by taking my Mom’s dog for walks everyday and going to yoga. Those few hours are MUCH needed breaks and make me realize how much I need LESS stimulation sometimes too. Great post! Enjoy your time with your adorable son!

I love how open you are! I feel like I have this pressure sometimes to always be online, to be connected and engaged. I actually started a rule in the house that no electronics after 8:30 and it has been AWESOME! So freeing feeling.

I have definitely had days where I spend way way too much time on social media, but for the most part I try to balance it out. Now that I have a baby, blogging and social media have definitely taken a back seat for me because the time just isn’t there. I am so glad that you have found a good balance! And Noah is as cute as ever by the way :)

I totally agree with this – I try really hard – especially when I am with Luke – to step away from the phone and only using it to take pictures of his smiling face and not for checking IG. . .

Love this! I’m so glad it’s going well for you. I’ve done a lot of thinking about this. It’s been a tough balance for me at times, and there’s been a few times that I’ve seriously considered quitting my blog. But, after a lot of trial and error, I’ve figured out what works for me. There’s definitely times (usually every few weeks) that I have to reevaluate how I’m spending my time and make some changes, but for the most part, I’ve been doing much better with balancing it all.

I think it’s great you took a step back! I had to do that a couple of months ago with Facebook (I have a Twitter account but never use it). I’ve also recently done this with blogs- I now just follow a handful I truly enjoy . It’s easy to get consumed in the realm of social media, but Ive realized that being present in your own life is way more important!

That’s awesome you’ve been able to “unplug” and tune into your family life! It’s exhausting trying to keep up with one’s social world. Sometimes I look forward to clumps of days that I’ll be working (12 hour shifts) because I know I won’t possibly be able to stay on top of the latest newsfeed on facebook, or like every single one of my pal’s instagram photos. It’s refreshing to not feel that social responsibility. I’m still trying to find a good balance… hopefully when all the snow around here (KC) melts it’ll be easier to unplug and enjoy reality. :)

I love this post & I can definitely relate! I’ve been trying to separate myself from my phone & engage in my life & it is tough, but so freeing. A few weeks ago I really felt like The Lord challenged me to avoid distracting myself with social media & focus more on living my own life. It’s a work in progress, but I do enjoy life so much more when I’m not checking my phone every 30 minutes for social media updates.

I definitely believe that I am spending too much time on social media sometimes. Especially working full time and checking facebook, instagram, blogs, etc. on my breaks and when I get home from work. It is a really great feeling to step away and to be present in the moment. This was a great post. And those donuts look delicious :)

I definitely feel like I spend too much time on the internet too, and just like you described, I so often find myself mindlessly scrolling through fb and blogs and feeling guilt if I don’t. It’s really a bad habit!

I definitely need a social media cleanse and think it will be part of what I give up for Lent. It’s so tough, though! I gain so much support through social media and always want to do the same for others.

I don’t blog on the weekends so taht I don’t miss out on life. Its an easy trap to fall into but feels soooo much better than feeling pressure to post all the time.

It is really hard to balance. I get on social media when I’m “bored” but then I realize that my kids are sitting there waiting for me to play with them and I’m just looking on facebook for the millionth time and don’t really even care what people are doing!
The way I get out of it all is to get away from my phone and just have my camera.
