Gingerbread house making contest.

by Elizabeth on December 6, 2013

I tried to think of a clever way to start this post however my normally witty and sarcastic brain feels less than functional this morning so let’s just get to the good stuff.
Wednesday night my sister-in-law Anna hosted my birthday celebration! Last year we decided it would be fun to do a couples’ gingerbread house making contest so kept the tradition this year… Although the boys ended up mainly spectating, commenting, and eating the decorations rather than helping.

P.S. Word from the wise: don’t laugh overly hard when your BIL asks if she was building a gingerbread house or a volcano. She will be offended and you will move into second place in the daughter-in-law ranking (there are only two of us).
Anna’s before the roof caved in:

Judging time…

Followed by cake time. This was the best picture I got so just go with it.

I requested a red velvet cake (for the cream cheese frosting) or a cheesecake. She got me both! If I can’t eat cheese plain then I’ll take it in the form of a cake.

This might have been my best birthday ever simply because Noah knows all the words to “Happy Birthday” and got really excited to sing to me.

It took me a while to think of a wish because honestly I have more than I could ever want in life. Cheesy (I love the stuff, can’t stop thinking about it) but it’s true.

And that was the end of the second annual gingerbread house making contest birthday party. It’s definitely one of my favorite traditions.
Questions:
1. What are some of your favorite holiday traditions and festivities?
2. Are you more of a symmetrical house decorator or are you a free spirit?
3. What are your Friday plans?!

What an awesome tradition! I need to do this with my friends. Although, I’m pretty sure I’ll be the person who just stands there and eats the frosting… I would definitely be a symmetrical house decorator. I’m way to OCD for something eclectic.

That looks like so much fun!! I used to love decorating those when I was a kid! All of the candies…. mmmmmm. I was always disappointed that the actual house always seemed so inedible, though.

What a cute and fun idea! You guys have a great extended family and all seem so close. I want to do all the fun things you guys do together! My husband and I actually decorated a gingerbread house last week. My advice to anyone is not to drink a few cocktails then decorate or else it’ll look like a 3 year old did it, haha. We are both sick (I haven’t had the flu in YEARS, boo), so we will just be laying low at home, watch a Christmas movie, and eat some homemade soup.

What a great time! I love gingerbread making! I am going to surprise my husband with a gingerbread making night (after law finals)! It was one of our first dates that he surprised me with! I also love ice skating, drinking hot coco ( dark chocolate almond milk for me:)), looking at the Christmas lights and watching all the Christmas specials on TV.
Very symmetrical when it comes to decorating. I like things to have a place and I like to feel organized and clean.
Friday plans are working and running some miles!

That’s an awesome idea to have a house contest! I love that and might steal it!!

Our best friends are coming down tonight for the weekend. It’s one of their birthday’s on Sunday and mine is next Friday so we’re celebrating this weekend since they won’t be around the next one. Should be fun, but I’m not sure what’s in store other than I have a Jingle Bell 5K on Sunday.

Your red velvet birthday cake looks delicious! Now I’m hungry for a dessert so I might have to bake something tonight.

I’ve only made gingerbread houses from the Williams Sonoma kits, so I guess you’d say I’m pretty traditional with my design. I make extra icing so I can be a little more elaborate than what comes with the kit.

So cute! Sounds like such a fun birthday! Also you should probably do a video of Noah singing Happy Birthday and put it up for us ;)
